Connect Reaches Out

23 February 2007

Staff from Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Greenwich joint programme attended a two day training day event at Connect as part of the Reaching Out Project. The training package will be incorporated into a new postgraduate diploma in Speech and Language Therapy which starts in March 2007.

Part of the training involved practising conversations with people with aphasia who gave feedback on the participants' communication skills. Participants also learnt how to train others, such as students, in conversation partner skills.

The training involved learning how to run a “Reaching Out” scheme to enable people with aphasia to have regular meaningful conversations and contact with a “conversation partner”. By running a “Reaching Out” scheme stroke service providers are able to extend and enhance their service cost effectively to often isolated and vulnerable people for whom regular speech and language therapy services are no longer available.

Canterbury Christ Church are the tenth partner to sign up to receive the Reaching Out Training. Also attending this time were staff from East Kent PCT, West Kent PCT and Eastern and Coastal Kent PCT who, as well as learning how the scheme works,  will be encouraging people with aphasia to apply for a conversation partner.

See “Running a Conversation Partner Scheme” toolkit training - a full two days training package to enable your service to set up their own scheme.
